Fluxbox
SuSE 10.0
Hi I would like to try Fluxbox. First I tried to compile it but I get this error - Code:
configure: error: Your libstdc++ doesn't have the sstream or strstream classes If it has to do with the gcc compiler could someone then please explain to me how I would update it and if I should worry about doing so. I read that programs compiled with an older version might not work if you updated to a newer gcc compiler? The only reason why I would compile instead of installing from rpm is because I would like to use the integrate with KDE option in fluxbox. As I understand it I need to compile with - Code:
./configure --enable-kde 1.Do I need to update my GCC Compiler, how and would it cause any conflicts? 2.Can I install from rpm and then enable the KDE within Fluxbox? regards newbie ps I already installed from rpm and logged in fine but it was not integrated with the KDE so I uninstalled it again. |
i could be wrong on this but i would try gcc 3.4 also install the plain gcc file. but i thought that alot of things are compiled with gcc3.4 but than im not real sure what is with gcc4.0. but if noone else answers i would try gcc 3.4 see if that helps.

umm.. i guess i don't get what you mean by the integration with KDE??
Why did the package not work?? P.S. - There is also a nice HOWTO from Novell for setting up E17 on SUSE 10 :D Definitely worth checking out. http://www.novell.com/coolsolutions/feature/16231.html |
Thank you for the answers.
I would really appreciate if someone could be specific about whether or not to install gcc 3.4 and what would be the best way to go about it. Quote:
http://fluxbox.sourceforge.net/docs/en/faq.php I can see that there is a lot to get my head around, but I would really like this feature to make the beginning as easy as possible. Fluxbox seems to have some cool features that I would like to try. I really like the fact that I can log in as both KDE, Gnome and Fluxbox, so I can have a look and play with it all. :-) The package did work. However and again as I understand it it does not come with the "kde support" that I would really like. Thank you for the link will defiantly check it out. |
I still don't really get it. But if you are looking to have firefox and stuff automatically added to your menu, you may ust want to run the command "fluxbox-generate_menu" and it will write the recognized programs to the menu file which is under /home/<username>/.fluxbox
good luck :) |
hi,
the fluxbox thingy says --enable-kde KDE slit support default=yes so i would assume the distribution package already has it going on. not sure what that does or how to use it though. lots of ways to mess around with kde in fluxbox try this or variations in you startup file (can't remember exactly the resuts of this kind of stuff but remember doing it once) kdeinit & kicker & kdesktop & startfluxbox |
Thank you for your suggestions I will try them.

Only thing left that I would really like to know about is the "GCC Compiler". Is it safe to change from version 4.0.2 to 3.4? And would I just remove it in YaST and then install. Thank you all Took a look at Enlightenment looks real nice. Here are two links that I have used a lot so fare. http://linux-blog.org/index.php?/arc...17-Review.html http://www.get-e.org/User_Guide/English/index.html |
i just left gcc 4.0 on there and just installed 3.4 too. and i have 0 problems well did until i moved i havent set up the system yet but it all worked fine b4 i moved. and to get gcc 3.4 should be in yast if not install in from terminal. i dont use suse much anymore but i thought the command was "you install gcc3.4" but again i dont remember.

I agree the docs are very vague about this you know if all you want is icons on your fluxbox there is a very light way to do it -- check out a project called idesk http://idesk.sourceforge.net/ |
fluxbox does not natively support icons on the desktop.. you can check out iDesk or Rox-filer to set desktop things... If you want the KDE bar on the bottom, you should excute "kicker &" in a terminal, or add it to the 'init' script that is in ~/.fluxbox
There are many tools that could give you icons in fluxbox, but it's not native. SuperKaramba, gDesklets, or aDesklets could also do it. |
Than you. I will do so ;-)
edit Didn't see the last two replies before I posted. Will have a look at it. |
