Floppy Install
 

I want to install linux on a computer that only has a floppy drive and hard drive. I want a distro that is as complete as possible and that should be able to support networking in the future. booting from floppy every time is not an options, everything needs to be installed to the hard drive.

Any suggestions ?

Need a little more info (ram, processor speed , hd capacity) and any thing else relevant.

Debian has instructions on how to install linux using only floppies and a network connection. Click here for instructions.

Be aware that Debian is not the most user-friendly of distros. I wouldn't be trying to use KDE or GNOME on a Pentium-120 either.

I came across that page, but as I said, the pc does not have a network card...

i'm not planning on using kde or gnome, probably fluxbox

there are some diffrent dists that you can look at .. theres a dist i think is called linux-floppy (kinda simple isnt it ;) ) .. but i would think you sould considere getting or borrwing a cdrom drive or a netcard.. to install a linux from scratch or take a look at picobsd .. even though its kinda (old)h

Do you have a modem? I've installed a debian system using nothing but some floppies and a dial-up internet connection before. The "network card" requirement isn't 100% accurate if you know what you're doing.

Might want to look at basic linux. It's a floppy install based on Slackware 7.1
It resides on the DOS partition has a base system, rudimentary X and pcmcia support. Grey cat linux is also a good one but requires 10-12 floppies to install. I have basic linux on an ancient 486 laptop and it runs great Nice thing about it you can add packages with the standard Slackware pkg command as needed.
