Floppy Boot Image - Help
 

I am running Windows XP. I down loaded a floppy boot image for Linux, but can't create the 1.77 floppy as needed.. Is there a Linux store in town I can go to?

What I'm trying to do is test out and set up a Linux based Network Access Storage device, and I got this file from naslite website.

if you have a floppy image you can use a program called rawrite to write the image to a floppy.

According to their website the best method for creating a boot floppy in XP is their NASLite v1.x Floppy Disk Utility CD-ROM.

Thanks but I tried that program (a others) before I posted. I haven't gotten any of them to format to 1.77 so not all the software fits..

I'm not willing to PAY for free software, especially if I'm not sure it even works.

I found this. It appears that someone is able to create a naslite disk. However you can not use XP.

know anyone running linux?

No one I know has Linux. I've gone to a few computer stores, and called several others to see if they can create a boot disk for me, but none of them have Linux. Thought someone here would know of a business that could help me.

The formating can be done under Linux. I quote from this link ;

The downside is that these 1722K floppies are somewhat difficult to
create and read in a standard way. WinNT can't read them. 9x and 2K
apparently can, but creating them requires a special utility. Linux can
read and create them, but you need to "fdformat /dev/fd0u1722" to create
them and you should "mount /dev/fd0u1722 /mnt/floppy" instead of using
the /dev/fd0 autodetection device--auto doesn't always work for these.

I suggest you download a copy of Knoppix and then boot this and then use it to carry out the operation. You can also write the image to the disk with Knoppix using the command dd if=/<source directory> of=/dev/fd0u1722.

But then of course you could set up a Linux based server and use samba to connect the server to W32 boxes and you wouldn't have to pay for anything :)

I found the format command yesterday and the Knoppix web site.. But on dial up it takes a long time to download. I hoped to find a "working Linux machine" here in Tulsa but there does not seem to be any. I'm told that Windows 2003 Server will do everything I need so I'll get that. (Plus there are Windows machines running in Tulsa.
