Flash player not installing. I NEED 5 ASPIRINS BEFORE I EXPLODE!!!!! HELP ME!!!!!
 

STUPID! THE Stupid software WILL NEVER INSTALL. It worked PERFECTLY 1 week ago, and for some reason along the way.... I would click on a video on youtube to watch it, and all I got was white. White screen. Ratings, comments, description, the works, BUT NO GOD DAMN VIDEO SQUARE! I had to CONSTANTLY refresh the page, and by some miracle the video showed up in a black square like normal, but sometimes it DID NOT EVER. it got me veeeeery annoyed and anxious. NOW. I have UN-INSTALLED and reinstalled firefox. I have tried uninstalling EVERYTHING having to do with adobe flash player. I tried individual things by themselves without others in soo many different orders. I have tried to install the 10 version of flash from the adobe site (the tar.gz one) and the only option i have is to archive it (idk what the hell THAT means) or to fuck around with a terminal window with characters. Is it this god damn hard to install a stupid program for christ sake???
HELP!!! If someone can tell me how to manually install with terminal, that would be great. Or if there is a universal version of adobe flash player i can download thats VERY easy to set up, that would be fan-bloody-tastic. THANKS!!!!

Have you tried to install flash from Ubuntu repositories?

There are sometimes problems with the flash plugin not playing video (at least on my system), to fix them all I have to do is restart Firefox.

What have you installed since it worked last?

What Ubombtu updates have been forced upon you since it last worked?

Have you tweaked any of you Firefox settings, about:config?

Have you tweaked anything in your ~ directory, example, .mozilla?

To untar the the flash download from adobe, open a terminal and thy this:
tar -xzvf "whateverthefilenameis". cd to the new directory created and there should be a file called something like "install-flashpalyer.........."

And take a chill pill for crying out loud....................

Intreguing - everybody else finds that they get a message asking if they want to install the flash plugin when firefox sees embedded flash. Just click the box. Are you sure there isn't a wee jigsaw puzzle peice or something in or near that white box where the flash movie is supposed to be?

AFAIK: 64 bit linux has issues with the flash player. Still, I am assured it is doable.

... you should realize that FP10 for 64-bit is beta software, and proprietary. We do not expect these things to work well, and we can only wait for Adobe to fix them. Still, installing is usually a matter of unpacking it and copying it to the browser plugins directory.

You can do this in the gui - just click on the icon, then drag the file to where you want it. OR you can right-click an select "extract here".

The other thing which occurs to me is that you can try Opera instead of firefox.

Some advice, from looking at the thread you have started, I would definitely recommend investing in a book about Ubombtu if you wish to continue using it. The investment in the book would be equivelent of all the aspirin you would have to take if you continue on your path.

There are also a plethora of websites that are available with plenty of how-to's.

Using Linux will require some studying and in the long run it will payoff huge dividends.

i had opera on windows and it worked great, but i cant install it on ubuntu.

Ubombtu, Splatware, Reed Hut, Gentsloo, Sues-he - yes it is all very droll.

But... update "forced on you"?!

Lets see, I get a notification "updates available" (which can be switched off) and click the icon. A dialog opens with a list of available updates and descriptions ... uncheck the boxes to choose which ones don't want ... click install ... enter password ... the next dialog has a great big "cancel" button... must be some wonderful new definition of the word "forced" that I wasn't previously aware of.

If I disable the repositories, then I don't get updates at all. Now - U-bunta-you is pretty prescriptive, but lets not get carried away. It is true that one should not install an update just because you know about it...

I heard that there are automated updates in slackwire too. A tweak artist like yourself has probably disabled them... wackslare has it's pitfalls too.

So, if we are quite finished being childish, let us Slackware, Ubuntu, Red Hat, Gentoo and SUSE (and the rest) users unite against the common enemy: Winbloat, I mean doze, I mean ... oh you know what I mean!

What is stopping you?

I don't know weather all of that was sarcasm or a lick of a stamp at haight and ashbury or both but the problem is still a problem. Wtf do I do about flash player??

enable multiverse then do apt-get update apt-get install flashplugin-nonfree.

Tried reading any of the Ubuntu documentation? Pretty much anything you need to know is covered in the wiki.

@NOoBuntuLinux: Craigevil is a guy who really knows where his towel is. Thing is, I suspect you've done something obscure to damage your firefox install someplace. For some reason you are unwilling to discuss why you "can't" install Opera so it's worth a shot installing the flash plugin from the repositories anyway... provided you remove all trace of the tarball install.

The Ubuntu repos should be your first stop for installing software.
See - system > administration > software sources for repos and use the synaptic package manager to look what is there.

This kind of issue is why I now only install 32-bit OSes and SW. I don't do anything that would significantly benefit from 64-bit, and staying with 32 avoids lots of problems.

Here's one other way to install flashplayer:

1) Click here and download the tgz:
http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get...0_linux.tar.gz

2) Extract it and you should see a file called 'libflashplayer.so'

3) Go into your home directory and view hidden files, you should see a '.mozilla' directory. Go into there. In this directory, if it doesn't already exist make a directory called 'plugins', then into this directory copy in the 'libflashplayer.so'. So in the end you'll have a path of:
where ~ is your home directory

4) Restart firefox and it should work.
