Why do you want to try Linux? It is a basic question.

Try to use Virtual Box - install some Linux distro on a virtual machine - this is safe.
Sun Virtual Box is a free software and very easy to use. Other possibilities are
Linux distros which can be installed on a flash-drive. I am using slax on my USB 2.0 pendrive.

Of course, all Linux features you will have only with hard disk installation.
You may try to find someone who will help you with the installation (I mean a live person).

To me, this is what I've found Linux to be. It's a choice. You can ask 20 people this question and get 20 complete different answers. I'm not a 'terminal' user, heck here I am giving you my opinion and you're probably more skilled than I am. But you asked a question on this board that I could give my 2 cents.

Enjoy Linux and enjoy this site. They're both pretty dang cool!
