I downloaded Flash ages ago, but gave up when trying to install it. didn't want it bad enough.
Now I REALLY want Mozilla's Firefox, but can't figure out how to extract/install it.
(I'm sure there's help on the boards already, but I can't find it. I've tried everything I've read and can't get it.)

I downloaded this:

firefox-0.9.1-i686-linux-gtk2+xft-installer.tar.gz

Where do I go from here?

That's a compressed installer you will need to uncompress it with the command

tar -zxvf firefox-0.9.1-i686-linux-gtk2+xft-installer.tar.gz

You don't have to type that all in either, just to about tar -zxvf fire and then hit tab and it should auto complete. From there do a

cd firefox-dir-name

and then

su

log in as root and run

./firefox-installer

Go to the folder that gzipped tarball is in and type the following:

tar -xzvf [filename]

This will unzip and extract the tarball in one command. Firefox does not need to be compiled so after typing the above command it will be ready to go. You'll see a file called 'Firefox' and just run that command from terminal or make a button on your task bar. Voila, done.

I thought it worked... I had Firefox running, but when I came back from rebooting it seems that everything i did is gone. The old Mozilla browser i was running was still there I'm so confused.
Anybody know what's up with that?
I was logged in under my username... my hubby's is the master should I be doing this logged in as him?

For some reason, Firefox was easy to install for me. I just extracted everything to a directory where I chose and then created a Launcher on the desktop to the firefox file in that directory. Haven't had a problem since...although I still need to get Java and Flash working with it.

Flash is easy,download , untar it to your home, you can use ark or tar xzvf <filename> and then cd install_flash_player_7_linux then ./install-flashplayer

Take that back, flash is working I believe...found out you can't get shockwave though.

And I got java working too...turns out it was something stupid on my part. Note to all you other newbies out there: make sure some of the commands with the directory structure in them actually match what your directory structure is. Turns out I was running a slightly newer version than the command listed on Firefox's site. Change one number in the command and boom it was working.
