First post! Newbish software question: Clonezilla partition problem
 

Hey there! Ok, here is basically a quick rundown of my situation:

Lets say I have two physical hard drives: drive 1 and drive 2. Drive one has two partitions, each with an OS on it. Lets say I make an image of sda2 (which has windows 7 on it) and save it for later. Not a full disk image, just a partition image.

Ok, so now I have a partition image of sda2 from hard drive #1. So now I get a brand new hard drive- hard drive #2. I install some stuff on it, have a good couple of partitions. 3 to be exact. I decide to move windows 7 over to that. Well, sda1 is occupied and so is sda2, so I decide to put my windows 7 partition image on sda3. The size of this partition is much larger than the original partition that held Windows 7, so it should be fine.

Not quite. :( Apparently, my clonezilla has a quirk that if I make an image of sda2 on hard drive #1, it HAS to go on sda2 on hard drive #2 or it says it is corrupted. Neither sda2->sda1 nor sda2->sda3 will work. No, it HAS to go from sda2->sda2. This has caused me massive headaches trying to figure this out!

Does anyone know a workaround for this or if the very newest version of clonezilla has corrected this? I do not appear to be the only person who has run into this problem (see link below- another question from this forum but the issue was never addressed.) but it doesn't seem to be well documented, at least not that I can see.

Any help would be great!

More info: I am transferring the image via SAMBA using two PCs and a home network.

I would be tempted to start again and move more cautiously, a picture is better than a thousand words, have a look at mine. :D

Ooooops thats an old one but it gives you an idea that you have make a tidy place for all your distros...

The problem may not be with clonezilla but with windows. Windows will not run from an image copied from another disk or even another partition than it was installed to. Part of their anti-piracy campaign. During a windows install information about the hard drive (UUID, etc.) is stored in the boot routines and if they don't match refuses to run. I hope you have a copy of the original install media for windows, else you're out of luck.

You have to be careful about how you use clonezilla. It may not be exactly the correct tool for what you want.

Partitions also need boot info. That boot info only agrees with the current drive.
