First "official" SUSE post after install
 

Thanks goes out to those who came before me.

v10 installed (as the default option in a dual boot config - with XP Pro, on my laptop) about as to be expected. That is to say, with but a few errors.

I've widdled the dozen down to the following. All config issues save one, imo.

1. following packages did not complete during install..

• xorg-x11-Mesa-devel
  
• koffice-illustration
• koffice-wordprocessing
• xfig

2. my EPSON Photo R220 printer was not found, and couldn't be added.
more than likely because of...

3. cannot browse the local network...

RESOLVED

can now browse LAN

NIC is config'd for no firewall
Wireless isn't used at home (the ever presenet Intel Pro 2200BG)

4. file swith the extension svgz, are not showing when browsing for images/wallpaper

Sure, there are going to be other issues as I get further along. At first glance, I'm enjoying it. I want to learn to navigate soley via the command line. I've used it a few times already. Though, switching to root isn't as easy as I thought it would be. How can I do that during initial login? The password is being denied (yet clearly the pw is correct as I've used Yast a few times already).

However, my journey from the dark side is in its infancy, and yet my first steps into the light are enjoyable.

Note. ease off on the dumping of MS totally, can't happen, need for my work.

Any guidance on the above is greatly appreciated.

I'd enable the firewall. The SuSE firewall applet does a good job and is easy to use. It can be accessed in YaST. I believe it is in Security | Firewall.

If you want to use the CLI just Ctrl-AltF2-6 to get to a terminal, log on as root and go to work. Ctrl-Alt-F7 to get back to the GUI. Logging on as root to the GUI is not a good idea. A few distros don't like you going to root and prefer that you su to root access.

You can browse the LAN on SuSE 10? Is your network peer-peer or active directory/domain? If it is on a domain, how did you get it to join the domain, and how did you get it to use domain authentication to mount shares? I am still using the command line for every network share I mount in SuSE 10 (for the record: SuSE 9.1 and SuSE 9.3 were flawless in this regard)

I don't know about that, as I said, I'm networked (thought I didn't say, behind a router, it was implied). If I thought it absolutely mandatory to use it in that scenario, I don't think I would've installed linux in the first place. :D
