First installation - Ubuntu server or desktop?

I am wondering as a Linux newbie, should I install Linux server or Linux desktop (first instance with an intention of learning Linux).

The answer depends entirely on what you will use the computer for.

Desktop/laptop/netbook for web surfing/word processing/music/video/games? Install Ubuntu Destkop.

Web/print/file/media server? Install Ubuntu Server.

If you are planning to set up a web site, and an email server and files share over FTP, and if you dont care about graphical interface then I would highly recommend the server version.

If you are going to do everyday computing and you really need a sleek graphical interface then go with the desktop.

If you just want to learn, install the desktop version. That way you can learn both the GUI and the command line: you don't have to use the GUI if you don't want to.

I don't recommend Ubuntu. The documentation is poor, they're always trying to make money out of you, and they conceal that money in a tax haven.

Three distributions that stand out for the amount of documentation from which you can learn are Debian, Arch, and Slackware. Arch is difficult to install, but Bridge will do the job for you. Slackware is short on software, but Salix gives you it with lots more programs. Read the reviews listed at Distrowatch and see what you think:
