this is really a strange message. What is it exactly?

just do these one by one

chkconfig --list sound

chkconfig --list alsa

aumix -q

fuser -v /dev/dsp

The first one should give
Code:
# chkconfig --list sound
sound 0:off 1:off 2:on 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off

Nice to see you may think I can help
But no, all users are equal and I cannot provide 1 to 1 support

Your sound card sounds like Mandriva does not support it very well
(I say that bec of the bug report).

Courage with linux
A piece of advice would be try mepis or Suse 10.0 or 9.3
The hardware detection for your card might be better

PS: Linux may not habe been deleted, maybe just the bootloader.
Anyway, as I said mayve try another distro (although I find mandy great)

try mepis or suse as I said before
If you ask 10,000 they will suggest 10,000 distros
Ok add ubuntu and kubuntu to try as well
