firefox videos
Hello,
can you please help me to set up firefox so that i can surf on the net normally?
i have been trying to make youtube work on my own, i've googled and i installed quite a lot of things, but it's still not working properly.
some other flash videos aren't working well either.
Please tell me exactly what i have to install, and what i need to remove (maybe some are redondant), and how.
I have ubuntu 9.10 and the current add-ons i have are:
divx web player 1.4
java 1.6
quicktime 7.2
shockwave flash 9.0 r999
shockwave flash 10.0 r32
vlc 2.28.2
wmp 10
please help me, i'm going nuts, i've been trying to search how to do this for hours and it's still a mess.
thanks.

Are you saying you have both 9.0 AND 10.0 flash play?
If so, uninstall one there sure to conflict.

Hello,
Type in your address bar:
and write down the name of the plugin you want to remove.
Then open a console as root and type:
Code:
find / -name 'nameofplugin'
Next simply delete the plugin in question using:
Code:
rm /fullpath/to/plugin
Then after restarting your Firefox you should only have one plugin listed and functioning.
Kind regards,
Eric

Hello,
I was away for a while, sorry about that, but I'm still having the same problem.
It actually seems that the player that is being used is swfdec, but I think i'd rather use adobe. How do I disable swfdec (i googled it quickly and i read that you are asked to remove gnome if you want to remove it...) ?
Moreover, when i typed sudo find / -name libtotem-narrowspace-plugin.so to remove the quicktime plugin, I got 2 results. Shall I remove both of them? (one is in usr/lib/mozilla/plugins, the other is in usr/lib/xulrunner-addons/pluggins...
Regards.

Where did you get the plugins? As long as you have the correct repositories enabled (i.e. Universe/Multiverse/Non-free, etc.) you should be able to find appropriate plugins that work on your system. A quick search of aptitude revealed the following packages:
flashplugin-installer
flashplugin-nonfree
adobe-flashplugin
ubuntu-restricted-extras (Commonly used restricted packages)
swfdec-mozilla (seems to be an alternative open-source plugin...not recommended)

I have no idea what you're talking about, i've just started using ubuntu.
Can you be more specific as to what I have to do to disable swfdec and the other plugins i want to remove (shall i remove both the paths i mentioned?)

I don't know about Ubuntu, but on Fedora systems one needs to add the non-free repositories to the yum package manager's list of repositories, to get all the required codecs for proprietary video formats. Maybe something similar is due on Ubuntu.
