Firefox problem in Fedora Core 6

Dear friends,
Recently I installed Fedora Core 6 on my machine, AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 2800+ with 1 G.B. ram.
When I press Alt+F2 and type "firefox" (obviously without the double quotes), firefox does not start.
When I try this two or three times, I get a message that Firefox is already running and is not res-
ponding and sometimes I get a message that the present instance of Firefox needs to be closed. After three or four attempts, firefox starts. Can anybody suggest ways to obviate this problem? Further, of late, I am experiencing a similar problem with xmms also, where xmms does not start and I don't get any message. The kernel version is 2.6.18-1.2798
