firefox no gui

Hey!

I have a question. I would like to know if it is possible to run firefox with its gui, its mouse, all that stuff, without having KDE or GNOME or those WM. I already have all the xorg package... dunno if i would need it, but I have it already xD.

Thanks!

Yes, and no, I think you need Lynx - a text based browser, lite, fast and possibly ideal for what you're looking for...
I noticed you're using Mac, hmm, I use Linux, so, that's all I have...

Luck!

Nope you can't just from shell. You still need graphical environment(i think it was called X server) for GUI stuff to work. Just install Fluxbox for example or LXDE(feels more like Win or KDE) if you hate big DEs - you won't regret. Or check wiki page. Btw which OS?

I am trying this with Archlinux on VMWare. The problem is that KDE is running super slow on my virtual machine... maybe I will try Fluxbox =D
Thanks!

Welcome to my fishtank! :D

I'd strongly consider Lynx...I use it on all the servers I config (mine dont have graphical stuff) and it runs like a bomb...

pacman -S lynx
Enjoy!

If you already have all the xorg packages installed, then yes, it is possible to start Firefox without any DE or WM.
Try it with
Code:

startx firefox
But keep in mind that if you run without the WM/DE you cannot easily resize or maximize the Firefox window.

@Arcane Hey, fluxbox really did the trick! It is running pretty fast (unlike KDE... I dunno if it is because of my settings or because it is a
virtual machine), and I like the fact that you can customize it like you want =D

Thanks for the advice!

@TobiSGD I will try that, too. Though I guess I'll stick with Fluxbox, since it gives me a nice GUI.
@Thor 2.0 I have tried w3m and it is nice. I haven't tried lynx... is it better?

A good choice and a lot easier to handle than using Firefox without WM.

I agree, I hate text-only browsers, except for emergencies where there's no way to get to a GUI.
