firefox compatibility?

What is the "netscape equivalent" to firefox 1.0 pre-release?

acid_kewpie 11-22-2004 04:18 PM

what does this mean? firefox is a web browser. netscape navigator is a web browser... they are "equivalent"...

pfunk 11-22-2004 04:20 PM

i mean is firefox 1.0 pre-release equivalent to netscape 5? netscape 6? etc..

acid_kewpie 11-22-2004 04:23 PM

it's a different browser... it's not equal to a certain version... again...

pfunk 11-22-2004 04:27 PM

i know it's a different browser but it is based on mozilla which was a by product of netscape.

the issue is that many websites don't "advertise" that they work with firefox - but they do say a netscape version that they work with. I want to know which version of netscape will also mean that it works with firefox? thanks

acid_kewpie 11-22-2004 04:29 PM

it's not about netscpae versions, it's about w3c standards compliance. ns7 was the last release of netscape, so most standards compliant, not least because there were more standards around. support will only ever get better as versions go on.

also firefox is not "based" on anything at all. it is 100% new code.

For the best comparison I can think of would to compare Mozilla 1.7 to Netscape 7. That's about it, you can't really compare Firefox as mentioned above, as it is entirely new code. Yes, Firefox is created by the Mozilla Team, but it's not the Mozilla Browser, nor part of the Mozilla Browser Suit. Mozilla and Netscape are both Suite based applications, offering the utilities for Web Browsing, E-Mail, Newgroups, and IRC all in one package. Firefox on the other hand is a 'light browser.' That's all it is, a browser, no email application built in with it, no anything else. Now maybe you can understand why you can't really compare Firefox directly to a Netscape release.
