firefox
ok im a winblows wiz but new to linux. i have tried fedora, ark, debian, and mandrake. ark seemed more eye pleasing than any other but support was terrible. mandrake seems very easy so far but..... since i am new to this i have a problem. i like using firefox as my browser.
i automatically log on as myself when linux starts. i can download the firefox rpm and install it. firefox will open and i can browse the internet. when i close the windows firefox disappears and i cannot find it. do i need to install it as root? if i do, how do i log on as root? if it is installed then where the heck is it? im new so details are needed. thanx |
You can launch it via command line by doing
firefox It will work. But if you want to create a menu entry to it in kde, just launch kde menu editor and create it. Menu editor is accessed by right-clicking in the K icon of the menu. You'll have to give the entry the whole path to firefox binary. You can figure it out by doing whereis firefox in the command line. |
when i run it using "run command" i get {Could not run the specified command!} if i type the command from a konsole i get {command not found}
thanx for the quick reply |
Try with the complete path, like
/usr/bin/firefox/firefox If it works, you can use it both in the run command and in the console. |
thats the thing. i cannot find that file. if i look in usr/bin there is no firefox. i think it is getting installed but not staying installed. should i try installing as root? and if so how do i do that?
|
Do
whereis firefox |
if i do that with the run command it flashes and then is gone. if i run from konsole it shows firefox in the next line but nothing else.
|
Forget run comand for now.
Use the console. What do you mean in the next line? whereis is meant to help you figure where are the files. Its only duty is to tell you where they are. Once you know, you can create the shortcuts with menu editor. |
remember i am very new to this. if i go to konsole and type "whereis firefox" the next line underneath it says firefox.
[kevin@x1-6-00-07-e9-6d-24-c0 kevin]$ whereis firefox firefox: [kevin@x1-6-00-07-e9-6d-24-c0 kevin]$ this is what i get. |
i REALLY apreciate the help.
|
Oh! Ok, sorry. I didn't get it before.
This output means whereis couldn't find firefox. Are you positive you installed it correctly? Install it as root, and after finished, do whereis again. Post here the results. |
how do i install as root? i do not know how to log in as root or install as root.
again. the help is AWSOME!!!! |
