"fine tuning" the kernel
 
I have reinstalled RH 7.3 Linux, and I've been going along with Mourani's Securing and Optimizing Linux - The Ultimate Solution. I am at the section where he is discussing "fine-tuning" the kernel.

I'm wondering if all this is necessary, or is it OK to leave the kernel, as-is, out of the box?

Depends on you. You could probably get a little boost of speed with removing what you want, but its not really necessary.

The usual reasons for compiling your own kernel are to do with removing something that stops the kernel working with particular hardware on your machine, or to compile into the kernel drivers for diffrent hardware.

Oh and to say that you can of course :)

You can but do it gradually. Sometimes compiling the kernel will help. You can also try upgrading to the latest stable kernel.

You may want to upgrade KDE, GNOME, or other desktop managers that you installed.
