Finding version of printer driver

I can't get My HP PSC 1110 printer to print - it say's media tray empty. Now this seems to be a common problem - lots of people asking this questions and answers thin on the ground. One thing I might try would be to check I have the most up to date version of the hpijs driver - but how would I go about finding out what version I currently have installed? I wonder about version control generally in Linux - is there some central place I can check to find out version numbers of installed software?

Sincerely
Simeon Bamford
