finally installed gentoo, can't get gnome to start
it took me a week but i finally installed gentoo. it runs on my g4 1 GHz tibook without the install disk. I would like to start gnome so i don't feel entirely lost (as i'm in a text only environment). how do i do this? i tried the command startx and xdm but these both just cause the screen to blink a few times then display an error message. xdm doesn't produce much of an error message but the startx has a lot of text.
startx says something like could not find hostname and the module vedos (i'm not sure if that's right) is missing. thanks. |
Did you change your XF86Config-4 file to make it configured correctly?

no i just used the following command:
emerge --usepkg gnome this is not enough? what do i do? thanks. |
For example that it's missing the module vedos I think that's because you have your video card set to use the vedos module. You have to edit that to the real module your videocard uses (nvidia for Nvidia for example, you might need to install the driver). Is the error you get at the end of startx "no screens found" cause then this might be why? Edit it in your XF86Config-4 file. I don't know if it's in /etc/X11/ in Gentoo but it is for me.
