the text i was looking for was either
ERROR
ERROR_
_ERROR

that's it, i tried all 3 of them with my code, and it works
i'm using KSH, maybe that's why your suggestions don't work, i don't know

I'm wondering if the OP is really using the bash shell and (if not) if the work of regular expressions in grep can depend on the shell.
