Im recently migrated from a windows system so can someone direct me to a simple description of the filesystem for a linux system vs what i see in Windows Explorer on a Microsoft system?

Also i recently installed Wine and then installed some Windows ONLY GPS interface software through Wine. However i cant connect to the serial port on the machine. I tried to access it both from the program running under wine and then just tried to access the port itself from terminal. So far its not accessible so what do i do? Could it be that my GPS just locks out my computer?
