"File System" infrastructure.
 

I just started using Suse for the first time and have been able to install applications onto the Desktop. Obviously, this isn't ideal.

So my question is, where do you normally install apps to?

Also, there are many seemingly useless folders with 3-4 letter abbreviations that make no sense to me such as bin, dev, etc, home, mnt, ...

Is there an FAQ on what each is meant to be used for?

Take a look at

All software in Linux is added or removed with a included package manager.In the SUSE I think it is contained within the YAST. And all those short name folders are the primary directories of your Linux, so you really should not delete any item which is not known like that. In general this is true, however you can install software from source
(when it's not available in the repo's, or when you want the latest version)
A good exercise is to put self compiled software in /opt.
