file system
 

hello,

I have an sd card that was abruptly inserted in the computer, which apparently resulted in the file system being broken. I was under windows when I bought it, so I guess it is a ntfs partition. It says 'no file system' and asks me to format it, but there is data on it I'd like to recover.
fsck.ntfs doesn't exist. Is there any utility, in the linux or windows world, free or not, that would enable me to repair the file system ?
I'm only interested in the data on it, but as far as I know all the utilities to recover lost files rely on the file system, don't they ? Or could I try to dump the raw data and manage to parse the data ?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Testdisk under Linux might work.

Testdisk would definitely be the tool that you are looking for. It should be available through your distro's package manager. Note that for me on openSuse, the correct package I needed was photorec.

The default file system used for sd cards up to 2G is fat16 and for cards greater than 2G is fat32

But even if it was formatted as ntfs, Testdisk is your best option for data recovery.
