file server OS for only 40mb ram + 133mhz CPU
I need an OS to use as a file server that will fit the specs of my "older-then-time-itself" computer. they are as follows:
--------------------- ** ~40 megs of RAM * (maxed out i think) --------------------- ** 3 HDDs * #1 15GB for OS/storage * #2 15GB for storage * #3 20GB for storage --------------------- ** P2 133Mhz CPU --------------------- ** CDrom (doesn't boot) --------------------- ** Floppy for booting --------------------- ** Ethernet card --------------------- ** Generic video card --------------------- I'm currently running a very minimal Debian with samba but its a bit heavy on the ram thus making transfers very slow any solutions are appreciated :D |
If your looking for server for storage maybe give FreeNAS a try, it has low over head, and headless the only problem I can see is the boot problem. If you dig around you may be able to do a network install.

I should think that anything without a GUI would be OK - I have Slackware (no X) on a PI 200MHz with 256MB RAM (it used to have 32MB) and it works fine. Fluxbox is just about OK, but since it's a server, I just ssh in, and do what I need to do from the CLI.
I don't think you're going to be able to run X comfortably on that setup; if anything's going to work, it'll be the lighter window managers - particularly Ratpoison: http://www.nongnu.org/ratpoison/ |
dang i broke my last floppy i need to wait till Wednesday to get more
but thanks |
