Question File Permissions

Can someone explain or give me a good place I can get information on file permissions within Linux?

I have read the man page on chmod, I get the first digit of the permissions, but that last 9 I dont. There split into 3 sets of 3 but what does the 3 sets pertain to as they all can have rwx permissions or a combination of rwx.

I'm new to Linux and leanring a lot but just cant get a hang of the permissions thang.

Thanks for any help.
