File permission information

Plz guide me about the following information .

drwxr-xr-x 3 jack smith 180 Feb 20 17:23 jack.txt

what 3 means here

and what is 180 ?

It is confusing jack & the word smith.

Last guide me any site where i can collect further information about file permissions i.e to add or remove permission
