Even so the support is limited, so I actually bought a seperate Netgear USB wireless dongle that supports 5GHz as well as 2.4. At just over £10 it was cheaper than wasting my time getting the built-in chip working.

Much thanks for the advise . . . But the joy of the journey and purpose of the mission and objective of the course can not be works of the hand without the input of TIME!!! Much Love/Peace

Htp: Just an update to my host of Helpers: Much Thanks. My challenge was complex and comprehended from the beginning so I respect and appreciate the time/effort shared. "SOLVED" may not be ready for the headline, but "solving" is assured. 1) root and su access denied challeges -- important updates and/or changes appear to be the hindrance to full solution. 2) Wondering whether the best thing would be to re-install (possibly without losing certain files and programs) . . . meanwhile, it is impossible to fairly apply, evaluate and/or implement ideas suggested, advised and learned . . . yet, I am still loving the journey -- times - up

A question before I suggest anything...How did you figure out it was a 4312? I see no mention of anything for his networking setup in this thread.
OP - Is it correct that you have a broadcom 4312 wireless?

The OP never confirmed but typically Dell uses Broadcom chipsets and a google for Inspiron 1545 confirmed that it indeed was a 4312. I took a SWAG and suggested that all the OP needed to do was enable the device.

Htp: That was the "lspci" command. peace
P.S. I read elsewhere concerning association driver requiring "sudo apt-get install firmware-b43-installer" as a possible solution; however, Root and Su return "permission denied" errors. The programs "win 7, ubuntu" and other grub menu items were installed -- with windows 7 being 'non-genuine' (not sure if that's part of the problem of the blocked access to internet connection); but the solution is at-hand.
P.P.S. Was on as Newbie on a similar discussion page, but can not seem to recall, find and/or remember how to get back there to connect all the info gained since then -- Yet, it's been a great joyful journey. much love/peace.
