Is there any reason you are 'tied' to centOS ?

You may find life easier with a different distro

have a look at Linux Mint Cinnamon ( avoid the no codecs versions )
The latest and greatest is version 15,, BUT version 13 has a much longer support window

Debian is also a good choice, but I think Mint is a little easier to get to grips with.

Things will be a little different, for instance apt-get instead of yum
