If you can't tell why you need a 2.6.x kernel, leave the 2.4.x one.

Personally I feel that linux 2.6 is more responsive than 2.4.

Posting this from Windows..I followed the tutor and done everything it says but after reboot it comes to a point where says

starting X11 manager...
and there it stops.. I can't load linux..Panic..What to do now?

Do you have setup the X-Server? If not change the runlevel to 3 (no graphical login) and type in "xorgconfig" as root.

post your /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Your graphics device section should look like this:

"Linux" is running, just not your X server.

the problem is I can't go to linux because it's loading kde for login so I can't do anything to login as root..any ideas?

ctrl+alt+f2 change to another virtual console, login as root, do whatever you like to do.

tried this but it's not woorking...when it comes to a screen "loading X11 session manager" it stops and I can't do anythig. Before that I have LILO where I choose Windows or Linux

After the lilo screen loaded, you'll see a 'boot:' prompt, type linux 3, it passes runlevel argument to the kernel, so you can boot into runlevel 3 (multiuser without X session).
