Introduction to Linux - A Hands on Guide
This guide was created as an overview of the Linux Operating System, geared toward new users as an exploration tour and getting started guide, with exercises at the end of each chapter.
For more advanced trainees it can be a desktop reference, and a collection of the base knowledge needed to proceed with system and network administration. This book contains many real life examples derived from the author's experience as a Linux system and network administrator, trainer and consultant. They hope these examples will help you to get a better understanding of the Linux system and that you feel encouraged to try out things on your own.

Just have a few questions if someone would be kind enough to help?
Ok I have mandrake 10.1, all installed etc.
When it boots into KDE the network is not active so cannot get any webpages. If I add a new connection it tends to work, eventhough I set it to start at boot, in verbose mode it says failed for the network.
Also I have another hard drive in the PC with windows. I added them as desktop items and mounted them. I clicked one (of the partitions) and it showed the files, but now when i click it, it says it is starting konqueror and then it just dissapears, both partitions are mounted on startup.
Hi and welcome to LQ!
Personally, I'd say it's a Mandriva bug, they tend to have problems. Try unmounting the hdd's and the mounting them again.
I don't exactly get what you want with the network... can you post what you did to set it up?
I have tried unmounting/restarting etc but to no avail.
When I installed it I chose which ethernet card to use (I have 2) for the cable modem, When I get into KDE this network does not start, i go to make new connection, using default values, it restartes the network service and it generally works, works fine every time in windows so not a cable/connection prob etc.
If I go into verbose mode on startup it says that it has failed to bring up eth01 and eth02

You may have better luck if you open KDiskFree (System-->Monitoring-->KDiskFree) and mount it from there. When you open KDiskFree you can right-click on the appropriate device and select open in file manager.

I use Mandrake 10.1 as well and I have had no problems with my Internet connection yet(knock on wood). I'm sure that someone will be able to help you out with that.
