Few Questions
Ok.
1. When I play vidios on mandrake, all I get is sound. (using caffien) Is there a better program/how do I get the picture working. 2. I want to make linux look diff (like using skins or themes or something). Where can I download them/how do I install them. 3. Is there a good media sorting program (like iTunes or Win Media Player) 4. How Do I make the "Bar" at the bottom of the screen (forget what its called at this momment:S) look nicer. 5. How do I mount drives (My windows C:/E: drives and my floppy drive) Thanks! |
Ummm I think I can actually answer one of these Q's.
Answer to #2: If you use the KDE desktop environment, go to KDE-look.org....Lots of cool desktop themes, backgrounds etc. ...hopefully I didn't just state the obvious. Now a question for you... do you by any chance know how to reformat a hard drive? I am trying to install linux on a used HD, but I've never even installed a used HD before and I need to wipe it clean. Since the info is not mine, I dont think I need to make a backup disk. take it easy. :) |
Thanks,
You can use a program called Partision Magic or the first boot disk of Mandrake (and Im guessing other distros too) Check Google howto use them. |
Hi
For watching videos, you need to have win32codecs installed. Set up your URPMI sources to plf free and plf-non-free and download them. There is MPlayer, which is also fine to watch videos (MPEGs and WMedias files). You can also d/load it from the sources listed above. if you don't know how to set up URPMI, go to easyurpmi.zarb.org : everything is explained Cheers |
So, bluemandarin, Partition Magic is perfect if you want to resize the partition of a previous installation, but if you are completely formatting a hard drive, don't bother with such programs. Just download the distro from www.linuxiso.org, burn the CDs and pop them in, with a GUI guiding you through the install the entire way.
