Depends on what default run level you have set, and if you've configured the system correctly.

If you have set runlevel 5 to be the default, it'll start when the system boots. If you set runlevel 3, you'll boot to a text-based console. From there, you can log in and type in 'startx'.

Before that'll work, though, you'll have had to go through X windows configuration (usually part of installation), to set up your monitor/keyboard/mouse, and test your settings.

Right, and IIRC a text-mode installation sets inittab to runlevel 3 by default; a graphical installation sets inittab to runlevel 5 by default.
