Fedora on an external drive, and Macintosh

I have a relatively new Mac (about 10 months old), with Mountain Lion installed. I am considering getting an additional laptop, and dedicate to Linux. Before I do that, I would like to explore the following scenario:

1. Have Fedora installed on an external drive (USB or Thunderbolt drive).

2. Be able to boot it, without destroying my Mac system and the software on it.

If anyone has experience in this (including how to install Fedora on the external drive), please comment, including any additional software/installation steps I need to have the Mac see the drive and boot from it.

fedora 18 64 installs fine on the 32 gig thumb drive i have it on
usb2 is SLOW though

and the first update if using usb2 will take at least 48 hours of non stop running

firewire or usb3 would be better

on an external drive ,no problems
Warning:
just take EXTREME CARE not to install grub to the apple MBR and install it to the external drive !!!
