fedora lxde install
 

Hi guys. Im relatively new to linux. I would probably say ive got a basic understanding, but not a whole lot more than that. So, i have a bootable live usb with fedora 22 (lxde) and i have had no problems booting it whatsoever. It boots right up; its fast as hell; its smooth. So obviously i want to install it on my hard drive. Its going on an old gateway desktop that has XP, so i am just completely replacing windows instead of running alongside it. The whole thing probably just needs to be thrown away but i figured id keep it to play around with and learn more about the linux platform. Anyway, when the system boots i am not presented with an option to install it like usual (ive installed ubuntu and xubuntu in the past). The usb just boots straight to the fedora home screen. There is an icon to install it to the HDD, but when i click it, nothing happens. The cursor will look like its loading something for about 30sec and then nothing happens. Is there a way i can install fedora on lxde with the terminal from the live usb? I appreciate the help guys. Thanks.

please post the hardware specs for this old XP computer

if it is a 15 year old XP ( no servicepack ) from 2001 you might have problems with fedora


as in if this has a nvidia gforce 2 to 5 card from 2003 and earlier

Yeah, sorry about that. I was at work when i posted this and couldnt remember what model it was. Thought i might get lucky and be able to give a short, vague description. Oh well, no such luck lol. Anyhow, its a gateway GM5052E. Thanks for the help. I really appreciate it.

I run fedora 23 xfce on a similar-spec old toshiba laptop with the same processor, and it runs fine. I think I have 3gb RAM. You have to be somewhat patient but performance is pretty good overall.

As a wild guess, since your system boots up OK to the live usb (and I assume you can do some stuff there, like connecting to the internet, etc), perhaps the install to hard disk fails because the existing disk is completely partitioned to windows. I haven't done a fedora install without having enough free space for fedora on the disk before running the installer.

Now i feel like a dumbass. No, i didnt repartition anything. I guess i was use to the ubuntu installer spoonfeeding that part to me lol. Well, id like to remove windows entirely, so what should i format it to and how much space do you recommend i allocate to each partition? Thanks in advance.

If you don't care about windows at all, just delete all the existing partitions then run the installer. The installer should be able to remove existing windows partitions anyway, there may be something else wrong that's preventing the "install to hard disk" from working.

For myself, I usually run shred on the existing disk to ensure it's completely erased before starting a new install.
