Fedora Electronic Lab in place of, or in addition to RHEL?
 

Can somebody point me to a procedure for installing Fedora Electronic Lab (FEL) on top of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL)?

I haven't been able to find a recipe to do so. I installed Red Hat Enterprise Linux last year, to use for IC CAD work when I'm between clients, or for work not to be done on client's machines.

RHEL looked like a good bet when I "became independent" last year so I installed it on an external disk drive. CAD tool licenses are too expensive for me, so I didn't get much use out of RHEL. Then I found out about FEL, an open-source set of CAD tools. Just what I need!

Should I cancel my RHEL subscription and delete it altogether, then install FEL or is there some benefit to having them both available.?

Hi,

You are wanting to install 'Fedora Electronic Lab LiveCD 12'? Why not use a VM? That way you can utilize with any distribution. With modern hardware you will see no major difference when using the VM on a host.

Thank you for your answer. And for the two links to system information. I'll read them in detail but began by searching through them for "VM" and "Virtual Machine"
How do I use a VM to help me run FEL?

I'm just a circuit designer, oriented toward mixed-signal circuits and have used UNIX for years, just as a means to an end. That is, I'm comfortable with nedit/vi/emacs as editors, with the commands such as grep, tar, find, cut, paste and the specialized editors such as awk and nawk, and now perl. And of course, c, for simple little programs and some not-so-simple but for my own use. Other than that, I'd just fire up UNIX then go straight to icfb (the command to start the Cadence tools). In other words, I'm barely literate when it comes to the operating system, and need further help.

Wish I could just find a recipe to install FEL and get to work with the circuit design tools.

Actually, I had found those links already and tried them out before requesting help. Problems: "yum" is not available in RHEL 5. Further investigation turned up suggestion to use "up2date". Executed the installation command substituting "up2date", and it did not work.

"yum" is in the very useful 'epel.repo'
