fedora core6 new install no video
Installing Fedora core6 64, after install and during first boot monitor goes to sleep. I think it may be using an unavailable video mode. Tried using 'skipddr' and 'noprob' options to command in GRUB during boot but goes to sleep at the same point?? No sure I'm using the options correctly. Video hardware is Nvidia 8800GTS and dell 22" monitor. Any ideas???
help much appreciated |
You may have an unsupported video driver. There are some video card manufacturers that refuse to embrace the Open Source Concept and for legal reasons the Linux Distribution may be unable to include it. Often, the Video Card Manufacturer will offer a free Linux driver to you. Nvidia may (or may not ... I am not an expert about this and this type of concern may be only of historic interest by now) fit this category. You may need to either change the default run level to 3 instead of 5 in /etc/inittab or boot single user mode to install the manufacturer's driver, if this is the problem.

I think you should have a look at this thread. I suspect Fedora has simply misconstrued the refresh rates. Sorry, I didn't feel like typing it all up once again.
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...d.php?t=533391 Edit: I see you use Nvidia 8800; you should bear in mind that this card was poorly (if at all) supported under Linux until recently. Maybe this issue has been resolved by now, don't know. Even so, you've installed a distribution that is older than you hardware: surely you can't expect it to recognize a card that didn't exist at the time? Follow the steps described in the thread above and also look for the "device section" in xorg.conf; you should make driver "vesa". If it works, you'll still have to go to Nvidia and download the Linux driver for your type of card. |
