Fedora core 3 mail server HOW?
 

Ok, im noob, not exactly sure how i've managed to have setup whats currently running..
haha

Ok, i have fedora core 3 on a p2 233mhz POS box...

The box is used as a firewall and webserver running apache for my webserver, i currently just baught a domain-name and currently hosting all my own stuff, using no-ip.com help with redirecting ...

Behind the server/firewall box is my internal network consisting of "windows XP pro" machines ....

I was previously helped by a friend whos no longer able to help, hence my cry for help, all read-me's are still in rocket-science lingo, if anyone has the time to ICQ/MSN to help or point me to a REAL DUMMIES guide to a good secure mail server setup, please do....

Unfortunately, in today's spamming world, configuring a secure mail server is not so easy.
However, I found Postfix's configuration to be quite simple.
So, look for Postfix on Google...

Nowadays, the default configuration is quite safe (for both sendmail and postfix, 2 well-known mail servers),
but I give you a few tips anyway:
-Listen only to "localhost" (127.0.0.1), so that your server doesn't do anything with mails that come in from
outside your network (unless you want your machine to become a real mail server on internet). By the
way, "localhost only" should be the default setting.
This will make postfix/sendmail act as your own, "private" mailserver (MTA - mail transport agent) and simply
sends out the mails that you send to whomever is out there...
-Setting up a mail server that is also reachable from outside your network requires a more difficult
configuration (eg DNS MX records, more safety features, spam filtering, ...)
-You should avoid anything that says "relay". Relaying is nowadays strongly discouraged, since it can be
misused for spamming by hackers.

Ok well, i've just done a clean install of FC3 with just apache thus far... Now what im trying to achive is for my mail to be accessible from the outside world, so family and friends can access/use it and myself when im away from home... This probley be so far over my head its not even funny...

Basically, i just want to be able to send emails from my place with my domain-name...

e.g. rambo@rambo.net (so if i emailed u it'd appear email from rambo@rambo.net)for example, and receive ... but i intend to block all incoming emails unless they are on a "accepted address's" list... dunno if this is possible but yeah...

only going to be 3 - 5 email accounts on this domain.. and probley around 30 accepted address for incoming from (if this all falls into place..)

it all gets so confusing real quick.. even using postfix lol.. So yeah, im after the difficult setup lol... help help!

The tutorial is written at such a simple level that somebody with no linux experience could get it working.
