Unhappy Fedora Core 2 CD read problems

Hi everyone!

If I insert a CD into my CD-ROM it reads ok, and I can see all the files under Nautilus. But... Im trying to install a package from the FC2 Installation CD using the "Add/Remove appz" utility under "START \ System Configuration \ Add/Remove appz".

There, I selected the "mozilla-mail" package and then OK. It ask me for the Fedora Core 2 - CD 2, but when I insert it into my unit and clic OK, it says:

Unable to access to the disc.
Unable to read the disc. Please confirm the CD is inside the unit and try again.

Why does it happens? I can see all the content of the disc under Nautilus, the unit is mounted, but when Im trying to install a package it doesn't works.

Thankz in advance!

hoi,

maybe you have to umount the 1.st cd and remount the second,
when you switch cd's.

No... It doesn't read the 1st disc. Doesn't read any disc from "Add/Remove appz" . It asks me only for the DISC 2, and doesn't read it.

I don't know what to do! I need to install that package.

can you install packages from the first disc? or from disc 3 or 4? Try unmounting and mounting the discs by hand if you can.

I can't install packages from any disc. I mounted the disc manually and it doesn't work too.

Ehmm I don't understand what you saying.

How do I mount dev/cdrom under mnt/cdrom ?

I have 3 units, CD-RW, CD-ROM, DVD-ROM. My CD-ROM is mnt/cdrom3.

actually i havent found the solution to the problem. my experience is to insert & mount the the required disk prior starting add/remove. it works for me. for your case, i m a newbie and just wonder whether fedora is idiot enough to seek /dev/cdrom only for installation

to mount disks or devices by hand you need to:
a) have support for them (either in the kernel or as a module/driver)
b) have a place to mount it (ex. /mnt/device You can create this with mkdir /mnt/<dev> where <dev> is the name of the folder/device)
c) mount it with "mount /dev/<dev> /mnt/<folder>" without the " and change <dev> with the device.

In most cases the cd-rom is located in hdc or hdd (hda and hdb is used for disks on the 1st IDE cable) so you can try "mount /dev/hdc /mnt/device" or "mount /dev/hdd /mnt/device" most likely you should hear the disk start spinning and see the message mount: block device /dev/hdc(/d) is write-protected, mounting read-only
