It sounds like you are having some kind of driver problem, or possibly even a hardware fault. Of course, that's a complete guess since we don't have enough information to diagnose your problem yet.

When it "hangs", what exactly happens? Does the screen go blank, do the keyboard LEDs stop working and does the computer make any unusual noises? If you press Ctrl+Alt+F1 do you get to a terminal, and if you press Ctrl+Alt+Del does the machine reboot (this often takes a few minutes)?

When you say it "hangs like Windows" does this mean that you used to run Windows on the machine and it hanged a lot? If so then that suggests a hardware problem is more likely to be the cause.

How are you recoving from this? Does the machine need a full reboot?

After rebooting, take a look in the file /var/log/messages. This may give some indication of exactly what has failed. Look for a line saying something like "[date, machinename etc.] syslogd 1.4.1: restart"; this is put out when the machine starts up. It may be worth posting the text of 30 or so lines above this one.

Hope that helps you to get some information,

Please tone down the colour and font size in your signature - it is quite jarring...
[edit]Thanks :)[/edit]

Then, everything rjlee said.

pradeep2002gs 11-13-2007 08:26 AM

i'll try the terminal... i was rebooting the os entirely
i'll send that file soon
my sys is dual boot
in my sys windows works fine no prob...
i meant that like windows pc it hangs....
i hear from my colleague that in linux u dont have hanging problem

pradeep2002gs 11-13-2007 09:06 AM

after this it got hang i tried all ur method but nothing happens....
please help me
is media 386 is suitable to me....?
i have doubt on that
i installed FC6 i686 also before an year it worked fine for me

pradeep2002gs 11-13-2007 09:09 AM

i also had installation prob
i posted that prob in forum but still no reply....
please help me on that also

link

matthewg42 11-13-2007 09:16 AM

If you managed to install it, then the i386 kernel should work just fine.

So, to re-iterate some of rjlee's questions, and a few of my own:
  1. When it is locked up, do the keyboard indicator lights for caps lock and so on respond?
  2. Do you see anything at all on the screen when it is locked up? If so, what?
  3. Does the mouse cursor respond when it is locked up?
  4. How long does the machine run before locking up (typical, minimum and maximum estimates please)?
  5. Is there a particular activity which causes the machine to lock up (e.g. using some specific application or piece of hardware)?
  6. Does it only lock up under high load, or when idle?
One more thing... this messages log you posted - the machine must have been running for you to get this... is this text you posted from the boot where you got the text, or the one before? For it to be useful the log times must cover the time when the machine locked up... just 10 lines before the lock up and a few after would be fine.

pradeep2002gs 11-13-2007 09:25 AM

1) i checked the keyboard light not respond me... i used num lock i didnt respond me
2)i see only the desktop which i used last nothing stranged i seen
3)my mouse cursor didnt worked... i tried many times
4)there is no specific time minumun:1 min.. maximum 15 min
5)when i connect net i getting hang soon..... but without that also i hanged
6)no when i was idle i locked...

i reebot the machine many times.... to get this log
i installed the os before 1 day
and continously i was trying to work on it the log which i send is 10 %
last log which i send it last few lines of the message
i was unable to send all the log here... so

pradeep2002gs 11-14-2007 09:45 AM

any solution to my prob .......?

matthewg42 11-18-2007 12:07 PM

Without more information it is impossible to say what is wrong. My guesses would be (in no particular order):
  • Overheating (make sure all fans are working and unobstructed by dust of because the machine in placed too close to something like a wall or another machine).
  • Memory fault (run a memory checker, replace defective memory units if found)
  • Hard disk fault (check your filesystems, replace unit if necessary)
  • Something else...?

pradeep2002gs 11-19-2007 03:30 AM

i'll run the memory checker again and reply u.... mr matthewg42

two fedora systems hang, similar symptoms

I'll include any requested info. Just informing that two fedora_8 units on our network have internal report tickets (to our support team of a private company) of system hangs. They are test units. Priority is currently set to low.

Thanks.
