Fedora 7 mess

Hi guys!

This is my first post and, as obvious, I am a newbie.

After "tasting" several distros, I tried Fedora 7 gnome and, after, the kde version. My problem is that after fde installing it always comes to a black screen that says "GRUB". No grub 17, 22 error or nothing, just that.

I have win XP on C: and fedora 7 on the second hd.

Even when I erase the linux partition (fdisk) and rebuilding the mbr with fixmbr command, is not possible to install successfully a distro, because always is the same GRUB screen.

Any clue?

Thanks!!

You have me confused (which is easily done). You had Fedora installed and working with the kde version? Did you just install the second hd? Are you disconnecting a hd during your Fedora installation?

In addition to running the fixmbr command, also rebuild the first boot sector, with fixboot. That *should* completely clear Grub. I always had problems with installing Grub and Fedora(Fedora 5). I'd always get the Grub error 17. I don't recall ever getting Grub 22. It sounds like you have a similar setup to what I did(1hd w/ XP, another with Fedora).

How I eventually got past this problem: I ran the fixmbr and fixboot commands. I then reinstalled Fedora. When it came time to install Grub, I chose to "manually" install Grub(or something to that effect, maybe it was expert/advanced). The next screen, I'd tell it to install to the MBR.

After I did that, Grub would boot w/o issue, and I could load either XP or Fedora. If you know Fedora is installed w/o error, you might try using the "Super Grub Disk", to just reinstall Grub.

You did not mention if you have IDE or SCSI hard drive. In any event, during the boot loader stage of the installation, the approriate place to install the Linux boot loader is /dev/sda for a SCSI SATA drive, or /dev/hda for a IDE PATA drive. If you selected /dev/sda1 or /dev/hda1, you installed the Linux boot loader in the first sector of the first partition of the first drive instead of the MBR of the first drive, effectively overwriting the Windows boot files. During Fedora boot loader stage of the installation, you should go with the default selection of either "/dev/sda" for SCSI SATA drive or "/dev/hda" for IDE PATA drive, which is the MBR, before any partition. When you install grub in the first sector of Windows partition, ex. /dev/sda1 or /dev/hda1, you will get an error 17, which means grub does not recognize the "Windows" file system.

Thanks guys!

Nevertheless, fixmbr, fixboot or supergrub disc couldn`t do the trick.

My both disks are IDE.

If it helps, one of the problems that I knew yesterday it was that the hda couldn`t be mounted... no idea why.

It seems that I will have to live with M$ Window$ for a while.

Any help is appreciated.
