fedora 7 desktop not responding

hi friends,

recently i installed fedora 7 dual boot with win xp in dell 1501 laptop
when i enabled the sound events using preferences
and relogin i could not see the desktop icons and anything on the desktop

i could see only the wall paper (and nothin including time)

i could not even shutdown after logging in...

is there any solution to get back the desktop icons

Did you install the drivers for your graphics device or card. Which graphics card do you have and what driver is being used in the "Device" section of /etc/X11/xorg.conf. It sounds like X is not refreshing the screen properly, I would tend to point the finger at insufficient graphics capabilities first.

thanks for the reply

graphic device is ati radeon

the driver is detected automatically during the install
desktop is fine before enabling the sound events

when i enabled them i could hear the sound before start up
but couldn't find any icon on the desktop even the start menu?!!

i viewed the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf by using Ctrl+Alt+F1 and logging
in as root it is "radeon"

is there any way to restore the desktop??

you could change it to vesa instead of redeon but then you couldn't run 3d effects
