Fedora 6 virtual server

hello

I'm wondering how difficult / how long it takes / to create a Fedora 6 virtual server.

any guidance would be helpful

thanks
M

You've not said anything about what virtualization software you're using or what host platform you wish to run on. In general though, it's nothing too complicated.

Hi Chris

sorry about not giving you more info...it would be a fedora 8 or 10.0 virtual machine running on a fedora 6 virtual server

acid_kewpie 06-15-2009 02:42 PM

running on a virtual server? you can't do that as the virtual server is already, by definition, virtual... and you've still not said what virtualization software you want to use.

I guess that would be quite ridiculous....having a virtual machine inside of another virtual machine. What I was referring to, is a web hosting company that provides virtual private servers that only support Fedora 6.0, and they don't allow any upgrades. So i guess there's no way to "run" a later release server inside the 6.0 server so that answers my question. Can you by chance recommend a hosting solution that supports root access and Fedora 8 or 10? thanks!

there is a way to run 8 9 10 etc inside 6
is that what you mean?
but it would be virtual....and portable too
meaning there is a way to do it, but have no idea how fast/slow it would depending on ram and especially processor speed...

acid_kewpie 06-15-2009 03:19 PM

Hmm, ok. well virtualization would require a new kernel and other modules which, if a hosting company is still flogging an obsolete version of a test / development distro, I wouldn't expect them to give you any leeway to do the necessary work to run a VM on any system. If the goal is really to not be stuck with FC6, then you should go elsewhere, they sound awful.

acid kewpie's knowledge far outweighs my own in Linux period.
however, portable-qemu does work as long as the host system has sdl library, which most distro's have...
but, as I said it's performance is directly related to ram limit and especially processor speed.
it does not use kqemu; which you could compile for it if you choose...
it's portable cause it runs out of a folder on usb/desktop,etc and plays on both Dindows and Linux.
But, as acid kewpie said, best option is most likely finding better company.

very helpful thank you.....will look for a better company!
