Fedora 4 & libc++.so.5 and X display problems

I recently decided to install Fedora Core 4, and I've been having a couple problems installing some programs with limited results getting the issues resolved.

One of the problems seems to be that some of the programs I want to install and run depend on libc++.so.5, which doesn't seem to be installed with Fedora 4 (it seems to install libc++ 6). I was able to copy libc++.so.5.0.3 from a Fedora 3 box and get some things running, but I still had trouble installing some RPMs that told me libc++.so.5 wasn't installed on my system.

I also noticed that the driver for my ATI card couldn't compile in Fedora 4.. I'm not sure if the libc++ issue is related. I have an ATI Radeon 9600XT video card, and I did notice that there is a Radeon 9600 guide. I started reading through it and got to the point of compiling the kernel after setting the appropriate options, but the kernel wouldn't make, even with a fresh tarball I downloaded from kernel.org. I've done kernel builds a lot before, so I wasn't sure what the problem was there.

Also, I'm used to being able to run programs from a shell prompt within X and having their GUI appear. Another problem I've had with Fedora 4 is that applications with a GUI will say "Cannot open display" when run from a shell prompt. With Fedora 3 and other distros, this didn't happen for me.. I'm not sure what to do.

Has anone else seen these issues with Fedora 4?

Eric

Try doing as root, "yum install compat-libstdc++-33".
