Fedora 30 crashing local network
 

Hi All,

I am not looking for help; just wondering if any of you have experienced the issue below:

I installed Fedora 30 about a week ago. On Tuesday, I lost connection in my local network. I was not able to ping any of my devices and my WiFi was down. My Fedora PC had a blank screen. The power was on. I forced shutdown my fedora PC and the network came back up. I logged in to Fedora and from the systemcl logs I can see that right before my net went down, a DNF auto update command was issued and right after that a reboot command which I believe is what hang my PC.

Yesterday, I experienced the same issue but instead of forcing the PC to shutdown, I unplugged the network cable which brought my network back up.

I checked the logs and the same thing occurred; auto DNF update followed by a reboot command.

I did not save any of the logs and I installed Debian instead.

Fedora is a 'try-out-new-stuff' distro in the RH stable - they give it away, and effectively, you're a crashtester for RHEL, which uses more stable and tested (by you) versions. Mandrake (==>Mandriva ==Oblivion??) put out beta versions but they were honest enough to volunteer crashtesters, and assign a dev, and open a mailing list for them. I was a crashtester for a while. We got alpha - beta versions.

That said you installed a very tried & tested Debian. They do have a rolling update version (Sid?) but even that's stable.

Yes, not a good distro if one requires a stable system. I just found it weird it would crash my local network.

Sounds like it just busied out the network...consumed all the bandwidth...if disconnecting the offending box "fixed" the network. Just guessing, of course, and no way to tell now that you've changed distros.

I experienced the same issue this morning running Debian 10 thus, I do not think it was Fedora who caused it. The 3 times this has occurred, Windows 10 VM was running on Virtualbox. I rebooted my PC but I did not start the Windows 10 VM.

Let see if it occurs again.

If you have auto-updates enabled you might find that this is a repeat of a bug when updating cockpit-ws (search online).

And to note that Fedora 31 updates of cockpit-ws are doing s similar thing. While updating the rpm networking goes down.

Just wanted to send an update on this issue: it seems like somehow my onboard was crashing my local network when running a Virtual Box either on a Fedora/Debian or Windows host.

I installed an external network card and the issue has not occurred again.
