Unhappy Fedora 26 upgrade failed

Hi there,

I installed Fedora 26 workstation beta from a USB-stick. I rebooted... just fine. I upgraded with DNF and rebooted into the Linux 4.12 upgrade.

after selecting 4.12 from grub, I get a black screen and switching to a virtual tty does not work. the recovery grub option did work.

Now what do I do to see what the problem is? I am a Linux newb, but you can get very technical with mee since I studied OS-design. I also did a bit of plumbing trhough the FreeBSD handbook and I did some programming. it is just that I don't know where to start...

Hello and welcome to LQ.

Not sure what way to advise you on this.

If your update did work correctly and you now are able to boot to 4.12 we may need to decide if your new kernel is somehow lacking support.

I assume you still have an older kernel available. Can you still boot to it?

I get the feeling there is more wrong here than simply a bad kernel upgrade. Could be some problem with how grub updated?

"does not work" is useless - if you want help, we need facts.
Normal advice is to remove "rhbg quiet" from the kernel boot parameters - that lets you see the messages as they scroll by. And where you stop.

But I agree with John VV, might be best to start with the latest iso - I've had zero problems with upgrading from F25 to F26 (32 and 64-bit), nor installing off recent media. The 4.12 kernels seem ok, but 4.13 have caused me issues for months with hibernation on radeon.

What you need is this one: https://getfedora.org/en/workstation/download/

And in Fedora, whenever a new kernel is upgraded dnf keeps the previous working one(s) by default. You can try the new kernel before removing the older ones.
