Fedora 11 Firefox/video help
 

I'm going to do some searching and of course I am fairly new have messed with a few different versions. I have installed Fedora 11 on an old HP system. I have 384 mb ram the system info shows 371.4 when i had a windows system it said the same. I have ordered another stick of 128 for the 3rd slot. Hope it will take it. Man. specs says 256 max. ANyway with firefox I cannot do any video such as Fox news video or youtube it refers me to Adobe flash 10. It will not install. Seem like I am having a hard time installing applications. Perhaps its wrong trying to do them like a windows system. Perhaps its too little ram./

Are there another browser tghat is less a memory hog but still will do video. Thanks

Use unofficial repositories.
Video card with memory for graphics.
Minamilize the window manager.
Noscript and about: config for firefox.

Explain "it will not install". Be detailed and specific. The Flash plugin should have installed more or less automatically.

But you really need more RAM.

For flash video, follow this guide http://www.fedorafaq.org. Although this guide is for Fedora 10, it should still work for Fedora 11.This how I got flash video, also Fedora 11 comes with the latest Firefox which use resources more efficiently then it's predecessors. Also, what type of Processor do you have?

the processor is an amd k7 not for sure about the MHZ's. ill check everything out thanks. may just not have strong enough machine

even with a fully working flash video in firefox ,this small amount of ram ... well it won't work well.

if you don't have "sudo" set up ( I DON'T USE sudo)
use " su - " once at the start.
and it is installed .

I downloaded a update from firefox and the video now works. Like you all said it does not run good at all. I've ordered anout 128 mb which at 512 i think would help some. That will give me a few days to lean more how to get it better. thanks this is a great support site.

you might think about uninstalling Gnome and installing Xfce

but i had fedora 6 or 7 on a box with 512 meg ram using gnome and KDE

If the other 128 stick works when I get it I may see about upgrading the processor. THe AMD K7 I think is a 550 and I have read I can go up to 1 Ghz. I have seen a couple used ones that were 800 ghz on the bay cheap. I have an old IBM thinkpad that has 512 with ubuntu 8 and seems like it runs decent on video. I'll have to cheeck it out later today. The one thig I was wondering if there is a browser that supports videos that runs on less resources. Thanks more later.

A 384MbRam in two slots of 192 each, additional stick or upgrade should have been done by adding another two (2) pcs of 192Mb's or if not available, the existing two should have been replaced by a single 512Mb Ram. There is an ancient tech rule saying "never pair or add another ram of unequal size to that of the existing" this has something to do with memory performance among old model hardware.
So much of your scarce resources is swallowed by a non-minimalist OS. Although by now you may be succeeding allow me to suggest you try a minimalist distro, get it here for a try.
This one I have already tried install in an old pc with only a 128Mb ram. It is fast there. This distro is Slackware based and it is very easy installing. You can play videos also.

Sure do upgrade your processor, 550 is nowhere near enough power. Also, a note, I have a 866 Mhz pentium 3 with 512 Mb with Nvidia Riva TNT2 card, video plays well even when I have 6 other applications plus a webserver because I do PHP programming. I also running a KDE4 desktop. I think the processor is the biggest thing, I don't see why 384 Mb is not enough. On my pc, the most ram I use is 240 give or take.

The applications, Eclipse, Firefox 3, xCHM, file manager, mplayer, terminal...

The PC actually came originally with 1 128mb pc133 168 pin sdram. I then bought a stick of 256. Which made the 384 mb. I still have 1 slot left, perhaps I should have bought a 256 and put it with the other 256. My problem that does not make since is this model of HP 8662c. Has 3 slots. Acording to HP's website there should only be 2 slots ( there is actually 3 slots) they also recommend 256 max (128 per slot). Crucial says the same. I may try the distro. Just a newbie question if I download the distro can I set it to dual boot with the Fedora 11. Thanks

Just got details on my MB dont know why its has something that HP states. Anyway its a K7M. One website says I can put up to 768pc 100 over the 3 slots. Amd up to 1 GHZ. Ill have to do some checking but looks like I can do some cheap upgrades. Just bid on a 850Mhz processor. More later.

good luck on the processor, however I advise to make sure your getting your processor from reliable seller and make sure they send the product as avertise. Also look into your video card, what are using?
