Fedora 10 offline update
 

Hi Friends,
I am using Fedora 10. Recently a friend of mine suggested for updating the Fedora. But I don't have an internet connection to update it on the web. Can anybody help me find an update file that I can download and run it on my lapi to update my current version offline.

That's like asking "how high is up?"....

Without knowing what you've got installed, there's no way of knowing what you need to download, to update it. If you've got a laptop, your best bet is to carry it somewhere, where there IS an internet connection...

There is a re-spin DVD available for Fedora 10 with all updates until April 10:

The original Fedora 10 disks have some buggy packages that need an update anyway.

Uhh...if he could get online to download that, he could just do an online update.....

Without an Internet connection and without friends or relatives with an Internet connection and without an Internet-Café or Computer Shop nearby - how did he manage to install FC10 in the first place? Where ever he got it from, the same source might be used to get the other DVD.
I actually thought that this forum was supposed to collect relevant and related infos...

Sorry about it friends. I think I'll try and get hold of Fedora 11 next month instead of updating Fedora 10.
Actually I got the Fedora 10 DVD from a friend who had very enthusiastically started using Linux by downloading the DVD but lost all interest after three days as he was unable to play music or watch videos, said that Linux was not for him. So he gave his DVD to me and I am using it quite fine.

You do realize that you'll also have to update Fedora 11 too, right? Updates and fixes are released frequently.

Also, if you friend couldn't play music or watch videos under Linux, he apparently didn't spend the 10 minutes involved to fix the problem. :)

What if he has fedora 8 and needs to update it on 1500 computers? Should he go online and do the 1500 updates?
Wouldn't it be quite understandable to use a removable medium for that? At least to build a local repository. But one needs a way to download it first, right?

I tried updating my fedora 8 from fedora-11-DVD, but it doesn't work (I don't want to "upgrade" to 11, just to update those packages that existed in version 8 and have a newer less buggy version in fedora 11). Does anybody know how to do that, please? Why can't I use Fedora 11 as repository for Fedora 8 updates?

By the way, TBOne, what for you takes 10 minutes, for a normal person could take 10 days or even forever.

If you have a question of your own, the convention (as with all forums) is to post your own thread.

The question is, why oh why do you just want to update packages? Packages designed for 11 generally aren't used on 8, or 9 or even 10, because they tend not to work, differences exist between the difeerences, not to mention the dependencies and such that'd basically mean you were doing a full upgrade, just a lot harder and a hell of a lot longer.

But the question of my own was exactly the one posted by the original poster and not quite answered except for the "why would you want to do that" kind of reply. As I understand it, it's better if the same question gets more developed in the same post instead of spread in several posts around the forum. But I'll take your advice for my next post.

Please guys, don't forget most of Linux newbies come from Windows and they don't have a clue about computing beyond inserting cd's and double-clicking on files.

I mean, help is greatly appreciated, but, we are not all as skilled.

I don't get it.
I've chosen to "install/upgrade" but it asked me for the root password, my name and password, it didn't keep the original display settings... I don't care because I'm just testing it on VmWare, but I don't know what would have happened if I had something in my home folder, I'd have probably lost it.
After install, it's going to update for 362Mb!
This version came out 2 days ago and it already has 362Mb of updates?

I don't get the Linux way, really. At least Fedora's way.
