Angry Feble sound in RH 9

I havee Red Hat 9 Workstation with Windows ME. After installing RH 9, i found that it plays all sound on my 880W speakers equal to a wisper.
I can hear even many of my MP3's.
I have tried installing xmms,Mplayer,Xine etc. But still the sound is very very low.

Linux shows my card to be :
Ensoniq ES1371 Audio PCI 97
the sound played during detection is also vey light.

But in Windows, all is well. Its shows my sound card as:
Creative Sound Blaster Audio PCI 128(WDM)

Please help !!!

Sound Blaster is a company that makes sound cards...
the ES1371 is a Chip on the sound card....

windows is calling your sound card by its manufacture name,
linux is calling it by its Driver name.

so nothing to worry about there.

this may seem stupid, but have u tried turning the volume up ?
is aumix installed ? run aumix, and turn up all the channels, especially PCM and volume.
