FC4: iPod isn't detected

I'm using Fedora Core 4, and I've had to reformat a couple of times because there were so many dependency issues I couldn't do anything, so I just reformatted my drive and did a full install (every package on the FC4 DVD installed). Every previous time I've installed, my iPod was automatically detected and a shortcut to it was put on the desktop. This time, something is different. I have it connected via IEEE1394, and the iPod is being charged (it has the charging icon on the screen), but it doesn't sense that it is connected to a computer (it doesn't have the "Do not disconnect" message on the screen). I ran a script that detects SCSI devices and it didn't pick up any new devices. I looked in /dev and I didn't see sda2 (which the iPod was detected as in my previous installations). Does anyone have any idea how I could get my iPod detected?

run a dmesg and see if it can find it. If not, plug your iPod in and restart your computer and see if it can find it.

dmesg came up with nothing, and neither did unplugging, shutting down, plugging, and rebooting.
