FC4 bootup help!

Hi Guys,

I am new to Linux world,

I am sorry its another those bootup problem with FC4 and XP,

but I have installed FC4 three times, and read about 100 post on the web still have no signs of solutions,

here is the problem,

after installing FC4, it went straight to XP,
so I tried to use the linux rescue mode, and manually create the linux.bin or bootsect.lnx so that I could edit the NT bootloader boot.ini

however I am stuck in this stage, because every linux.bin I created is empty, whats wrong?
(i tried the ' dd if=/dev/hda3 of=/bootsect.lnx bs=512 count=1 ' on all of my drives)

After reading other messages I searched on the web, I also tried to do the ' grub-install /dev/hdc1 '

however it returns with an error message saying
'/dev/hdc1 does not have any corresponding BIOS drive'

could somebody tell me what have I done wrong?

note the /dev/hdc1 was the /boot mount when I do the df command.

thank you for your help!

Did you have XP installed first, then installed FC4, if you did it in that order FC4 would already have added windows to the bootloader during the install, so you shouldn't need to touch the NT boot.ini file, Grub will take over the boatloader operation for both operating systems completely bypassing the windows bootloader.

yes, I windows was already there before I install FC4,

by the way, where should the the Grub loader be installed during the FC installation process?

hda is XP
hdc is FC4

i installed grub on hda, while some post say it should be installed in the linux drive, but that method has to alter the BIOS startup option to bootup.

I've only installed FC4 the other week i'm mostly use lilo with my other distros which installs to the MBR (master boot record). I just went with the default settings for grub I did not change anything when I installed FC4. So I'm not sure if it uses the MBR or creates a boot partition for it.
