Best way to avoid booting problems is to create 2 partitions in ext2 or ext3, size 10Gb for FC and 1Gb for swap, with PM. Just install FC into the large partition.

When it comes to the boot loader try to opt for a bootable floppy. If this is not available then the next choice should be the MBR. You can ask an operational FC4 to repeat Grub in

(1) a floppy
(2) MBR
(3) its own root partition

any number of time. Choice (1) is for nervous beginner. Choice (2) is the proper way to dual boot and choice (3) is for FC to be multi-booted by another system which could be a XP or another Linux.

You can always get your XP back by booting the PC up with a bootable DOS floppy and type fdisk /mbr. The alternative is to boot it with XP or Win2k installation CD, drop into recovery console and type fixmbr. The two methods are bomb proof so why worry losing XP? All boot loaders are re-installable. You are just not aware of how it is done.

Drop the the idea of using Windows boot.ini. Yes it works but you need to have a Linux up and running first in order to have its boot loader copied into XP's C drive to satisfy boot.ini. By which time you would have already been dual booting already.

FC4 Grub needs 1/10 of the effort of XP's boot.ini to multi boot.
